Contractors are awesome. I have the utmost respect for them and for what they do. I came up on the GC side, before I was an Architect, so I know what it’s like firsthand!
That said, there’s a wide range of sophistication, scale, back-of-house/admin support, and expertise among contractors, and it’s worth making sure they’re covering the basics.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hounded crews to get this stuff right, only to be [sadly] proven correct when an entirely preventable disaster strikes. It can sometimes feel like you’re shouting into the void or nagging with some contractors - but stand your ground - as owner or architect [or GC managing subs] you have a higher responsibility than catering to whiny, unprofessional behavior.
These are *very* basic things…and yet…I see them missed on jobsites all the time - even the big ones!
